A dear friend of mine Dr.Nalamothu Krishna had started a blog just on Bible commentary. In the beginning he would write the posts himself, insert adsense and what do you know, his blog started getting visitors and clicks. He is a very smart fellow this Doctor Nalamothu. He is a genuine practicing doctor in South India but could not put up with the beaurocrats in his line. He just asked them to get lost and turned to the internet for an extra source of income. However, with its metamorphosis Yahoo! has also added something that will please search marketers — an offline ad editor. The Yahoo! Search Marketing Desktop, something long desired by marketers, will cut out much of the pain in making bulk changes or restructuring a campaign. David Pann, vice president and general manager of Yahoo!’s U.S. Search Advertising Business, told ClickZ that some clients have been able to make global campaign changes in a half hour that used to take several. The tool is currently in private beta but will be introduced to all advertisers next year. Today Facebook announced that it now has over 500 million registered users, an increase of some 100 million in the last five months, and of 400 million in the last two years. Mark Zuckerberg has already told us that it is "almost guaranteed" that the site will eventually reach a billion users, but with no indication of when he thinks that might happen.
Facebook has managed to ride out the storm of the recent privacy controversy, and it has almost become accepted wisdom that users have little expectation of privacy so one has to admire their approach of pushing the envelope of what is acceptable and then pulling back by a fraction. Take a mile and give an inch is working for Facebook, and no mistake.
So what lessons should we take from this announcement? We would suggest three key takeaways:
